What is Rey?
In Hawaiian culture, gifts have various meanings depending on who you give them to, such as "welcome," "blessing," or "thank you."
Introducing the flowers used in this lei
Pakalana
This flower was brought to Hawaii by Chinese immigrants and is also known as the Chinese Violet. It has very thick greenish petals and a very nice sweet scent.
The harvest season is from late spring to autumn, and the fragrance is strongest in the early morning and evening. The flowers are green when they first bloom, but as the days go by, they turn slightly yellow. In Japan, they are called "Yaraiko" (night fragrant) because they are especially fragrant at night.
Pikake
Its wonderful scent makes it an ingredient in perfumes, and it can also be enjoyed in tea or water as jasmine tea or pikake water. It is said to have been a favorite flower of Princess Kaiulani, who loved this flower brought from China so much that she named it pikake. Pikake means "peacock" in Hawaiian, and the buds are used to make leis.
