~Traditional crafts that fully embrace the blessings of Hawaii's sky, sea, and earth~

Make an authentic fan and bag with Lauhala

Lauhala is a typical Hawaiian craft that has supported Hawaiian life since ancient times.

In Hawaiian, lau means "leaf" and hala means "tree name." Lauhala means "hala leaf." Hala leaves are strong, soft, and durable, and have long been used as a material for making hala leaves. It is said that Hawaiian royalty also used lauhala woven mats as bedding.

Making lauhala in Hawaii begins with plucking leaves from the hala trees and gathering the fallen leaves.
This is a valuable program that allows you to fully experience the entire process of travelling to Ni'iuli's Hala Tree, a famous spot along the beaches of Kohala where hala trees grow, collecting the leaves that will be used as materials, preparing the lauhala, and weaving them into finished fans and bags.

The instructor will be Wesley Sen, a Lauhala Weaving artist who has been directly instructed by Hawaiian botanist and historian Beatrice Lrauss and continues to teach traditional techniques passed down from ancient times to the present day. We will be making a fan and bag using lauhala weaving. Why not take this rare opportunity to experience Hawaii's traditional crafts and try your hand at making an authentic lauhala fan and bag?

During your two-day nature program, you will have free time to explore the grounds of Banyan Bridge.

You can also enjoy fresh juice made from fruits grown in Hawaii and snacks made from macadamia nuts harvested within Banyan Bridge. Please experience this special program that will heal your mind and body.
